THE BORING TABLE.
WHEN I WAS FIRST GIVEN MY EW AS A BIRTHDAY GIFT, I WAS EAGER, GIVEN MY COLLECTORS MENTALITY, TO PURCHASE ALL OF THE ACCESSORIES THAT WERE AVAILABLE FROM J W STRINGER. HOWEVER THESE WERE EXPENSIVE FOR A 13 YEAR OLD BOY WITH AN INCOME OF FIVE SHILLINGS A WEEK POCKET MONEY. I DID MANAGE TO SAVE UP ENOUGH TO BUY A BORING TABLE AND THIS HAS JUST FOLLOWED ME AROUND ALL MY ADULT LIFE STILL UNUSED BUT I WILL NEVER SELL IT.
THE MARTIN CLEEVE SOLUTION
AMONG HIS ARTICLES THAT WERE PUBLISHED IN THE MODEL ENGINEER MAGAZINE DURING 1958, MARTIN SHOWED THE READERS HOW TO FABRICATE A WORKING BORING TABLE.
IT`S PROBABLY BEST TO PRINT OUT THESE PAGES TO MAKE THE ARTICLE EASIER TO READ
LOOKING AT THE ABOVE PAGES, MARTIN USED HIS MYFORD TO CARRY OUT SOME MACHINING FOR HIS EW BORING TABLE. HE SCALED DOWN HIS ARTICLES FOR THE MYFORD IMPROVEMENTS TO SUIT THE EW. THESE DID NOT ALWAYS WORK ON THE EW AS WELL AS THEY SHOULD HAVE.
THIS IS THE WAY TO GO IF YOU HAVE THE TIME TO DO IT. I WILL MEASURE UP MY ORIGINAL EW BORING TABLE AND ADD THE SKETCH TO THIS PAGE SO THAT WE CAN COMPARE THE ORIGINAL TO THE ABOVE CLEEVE PRODUCT.
THE EW BORING TABLE
ABOVE, THE TOP AND UNDERNEATH THE ORIGINAL EW BORING TABLE. THE RIGHT HAND IMAGE SHOWS THE GIB SIDE OF THE TABLE. NOTE THAT THERE ARE SIX 3/16" WHIT ADJUSTING SCREWS BUT NO LOCKNUTS? IT ALSO SHOWS THE TEE SLOT DIMENSIONS. THIS TABLE WAS DESIGNED TO USE THE EXISTING CROSS SLIDE HANDWHEEL ASSEMBLY.
.MARTIN MADE HIS BORING TABLE SLIMMER AND LONGER THAN THE ORIGINAL EW TABLE, SO IF FOLLOWING MARTINS DESIGN BUT MAKING IT TO THE EW DIMENSIONS, THEN IT MIGHT BE ADVISABLE TO ADD EXTRA INTERMEDIATE HOLDING DOWN SCREWS FOR THE TEE PIECES.
EW OWNERS HAVE REPORTED BREAKAGES OF THE TEE SLOTS ON THE ORIGINAL TABLE. THIS CAN HAPPEN ON ANY MACHINE IF CARE IS NOT TAKEN, SO IT`S BEST TO FOLLOW THE CROWD AND MAKE ELONGATED TEE PIECES TO SPREAD THE LOAD IN THE SLOTS WHEN CLAMPING.
AN INTERESTING POINT ABOUT THE EW TABLE IS THAT THE CASTING HAS EQUAL WIDTHS FOR THE SLIDEWAY SIDES, WHEN NORMAL PRACTICE IS TO MAKE THE SLIDEWAY WIDTH FOR THE GIB SCREWS SMALLER THAN THE OTHER SIDE SO THAT THE TABLE IS EQISPACED ABOUT THE CENTRELINE OF THE HANDWHEEL SCREW.
THIS MEANS THAT THE EW TABLE IS NOT EQUISPACED ABOUT THE CENTRELINE OF THE HANDWHEEL SCREW. NOT A PROBLEM BUT I WONDER WHY MR. STRINGER CHOSE TO DO THIS?
