THE EW LATHE LEADSCREW DOG CLUTCH
ABOVE IS MY ORIGINAL DESIGN SKETCH FOR THE CLUTCH AND BELOW IS THE CLUTCH IN IT`S PRESENT ALMOST FINISHED STATE.
THE ORIGINAL DESIGN SHOWN IN THE SKETCH DID NOT COME UP TO SCRATCH MAINLY BECAUSE THE OPERATING LEVER WAS TOO SHORT AND TOOK A LOT OF FORCE TO MOVE WHILST TAKING A LARGE CUT. MODIFICATIONS HAD TO BE MADE TO MAKE IT WORK AS IT SHOULD. THE PHOTO ABOVE SHOWS THE PRESENT CONFIGURATION, IT WORKS WELL BUT I WILL REMANUFACTURE THE CLUTCH OPERATING GLUT IN BRONZE, NOT ALUMINIUM AS IT IS AT THE MOMENT. THE LONG LEVER MAKES DISENGAGEMENT OF THE CLUTCH UNDER CUTTING MUCH EASIER AND ALSO KEEPS THE HAND AWAY FROM ALL THOSE DANGEROUS MOVING PARTS AND MOUNTING THE BALL ON THE SIDE OF THE LEVER AWAY FROM THE LATHE ALSO HELPS!.

ABOVE THE MOCK UP OF THE CLUTCH ASSEMBLY. IT WORKED, BUT NOT AS WELL AS IT SHOULD HAVE. THE ALUMINIUM RAISING BLOCKS NOT ONLY GIVE BETTER CLEARANCE UNDER THE LATHE BED FOR CLEANING BUT ALSO SERVE TO MOUNT THE BRACKET FOR THE CLUTCH OPERATING LEVER.

I`VE HAD A LOT OF QUIRIES FROM EW OWNERS ASKING ABOUT THE DOG CLUTCH, SO AM STARTING TO ADD WORKING DRAWINGS TO HELP OUT.
THIS IS A DESIGN BASED ON THE MARTIN CLEEVE DESIGN FIRST PUBLISHED IN THE MODEL ENGINEER MAGAZINE.

HERE IS THE FIRST SHEET, PLEASE NOTE THAT I`VE USED CHAIN DIMENSIONING AS IT`S EASY TO FOLLOW AND THERE ARE NO TIGHT TOLERANCES TO OBSERVE EXCEPT FOR THE RUNNING FITS.
ABOVE SHEET 2 OF THE DOG CLUTCH DRAWINGS, I HAD TO RUSH THESE DRAWINGS AS I DON`T HAVE A LOT OF SPARE TIME AT THE MOMENT AND HOPE THAT THEY GIVE A CLEAR PICTURE OF HOW THE CLUTCH IS MADE.
