IMPROVEMENTS TO THE MES VERTICAL GRINDER
WHILST TRYING TO PUT THE GRINDER BACK INTO SERVICE, I FOUND THAT THE STANDARD GRINDING WHEEL WAS NOT SUITABLE FOR GRINDING SOFT STEEL. THE GRINDING WHEEL SUPPLIED BY MES, ALTHOUGH CHOSEN TO BE FOR BOTH FERROUS AND NON FERROUS METALS, DID NOT COME UP TO MY EXPECTATIONS FOR GRINDING MILD STEEL AS THE STONE DID NOT CUT CLEANLY AND MADE A LOUD NOISE.
ABOVE LEFT, ON THE LHS OF THE PHOTO IS THE STANDARD GRINDING WHEEL HUB MADE FROM CAST STEEL WITH THE GRINDING CUP WHEEL CEMENTED INTO IT. THIS SYSTEM DID NOT ALLOW A CHANGE OF WHEEL.
ON THE RHS OF THE PHOTO IS A 5 INCH CUP WHEEL WITH A STANDARD 1.25 INCH BORE.
ABOVE RIGHT A SELECTION OF CUP GRINDING WHEELS THAT I BOUGHT FROM LEKNES MASKIN IN ANTICIPATION OF MAKING A NEW WHEEL HUB SYSTEM THAT WOULD ALLOW THE WHEEL TO BE QUICKLY CHANGED.

ABOVE LEFT, I FOUND THIS MOTOR SPINDLE COUPLING IN MY SCRAP BOX, IT HAD THE CORRECT .625 INCH DIAMETER HOLE IN IT, AND IT`S WEIGHT WOULD ACT AS A FLYWHEEL. THEN I MACHINED THE END OF A SOCKET HEADED SCREW TO FIT IN THE .1875 INCH KEYWAY TO CLAMP THE COUPLING ONTO THE SPINDLE.
THIS WILL BE THE BASIS FOR THE INTERCHANGEABLE GRINDING WHEEL SPINDLES WHICH WILL BE BOLTED ONTO IT. NOW I WILL HAVE TO FIND SOME MS BAR TO MAKE THE SPINDLES FROM.
ABOVE RIGHT, I`M USING THE COMPACT 6 INCH CIRCULAR TABLE TO SPACE OUT THE THREE HOLDING DOWN SCREW HOLES IN THE NEW GRINDING WHEEL HOLDER. THE LACK OF VERTICAL HEIGHT UNDER THE SPINDLE IS THE REASON FOR THE RATHER HEATH ROBINSONISH CLAMPING SYSTEM AS THERE WASN`T ENOUGH SPACE TO MOUNT A CHUCK ON THE TABLE!
