MYFORD RAGLAN MILLING MACHINE REPAIRING THE MOTOR
REPAIRING THE BLOWN MOTOR AND THE PULLEY MECHANISM
i WAS MACHINING THE NEW MILLING HEAD FOR THE HEADLESS DORE WESTBURY MILLING MACHINE AND SUDDENLY THE MAIN FUSEBOX CUT OFF THE CURRENT TO THE MACHINE! I TRIED SEVERAL TIMES TO START THE MACHINE AGAIN AFTER RE-SETTING THE FUSEBOX SWITCH BUT WITH THE SAME RESULT.
I THEN ISOLATED THE MOTOR FROM THE CONTACTOR AND WIRED IT DIRECTLY TO THE FUSEBOX WITH AGAIN THE SAME RESULT, THE FUSEBOX JUST CUTTING OFF THE POWER. THE MOTOR WAS OBVIOUSLY SICK SO I REMOVED IT FROM THE MACHINE AND DISMANTLED IT FOR INSPECTION.
USING THE MULTIMETER I QUICKLY ESTABLISHED THAT ONE OF THE PHASE WINDINGS HAD BLOWN. AS iT WAS THE ONLY MILLING MACHINE THAT WAS OPERABLE AT THE HOBØL WORKSHOP I NEEDED IT BACK IN ACTION ASAP! AS A NEW MOTOR WOULD NOT FIT I SCOURED EBAY UK AND FOUND A MOTOR THE SAME TYPE AND MAKE AS THE BURNT OUT ONE AND BOUGHT IT FOR £60. THE SELLER WAS "MYFORD STUFF" THEY WERE WILLING TO SEND IT TO NORWAY AND IT ARRIVED ABOUT FIVE DAYS LATER. POSTAGE WAS £38 AND THE TOLL CHARGED ME 314 NOK SO THE WHOLE DEAL COST ABOUT THE SAME AS BUYING A NEW MOTOR IN NORWAY.

ABOVE A GENERAL VIEW OF THE BACK OF THE MACHINE
ABOVE, THE MOTER IS REMOVED SHOWING THE THE SPINDLE PULLEY AND PULLEY OPERATING MECHANISM. AND ABOVE RIGHT THE VIEW INSIDE THE ALUMINIUM COLUMN SHOWING THE BOLTS THAT HOLD THE CAST IRON VEE SLIDE TO THE FRONT OF THE COLUMN.
WHEN I RECEIVED THE USED MOTOR FROM THE UK, AFTER TESTING IT, I STRIPPED IT DOWN AND TOOK OUT THE STATOR AND RE ASSEMBLED IT WITH THE STATOR FROM THE ORIGINAL MOTOR. THIS WAS BECAUSE THE ORIGINAL SPINDLE HAD A COUNTERSUNK HOLE THAT LOCATED THE MOTOR PULLEY AT THE CORRECT POSITION VIA A GRUB SCREW.
WHEN I STRIPPED DOWN THE MOTOR PULLEY I DISCOVERED THAT THE SQUARE KEY THAT SHOULD BE LOCATED IN THE MOTOR SPINDLE KEYWAY WAS MISSING SO ALL THE DRIVE FORCE HAD BEEN TAKEN BY THE GRUB SCREW THAT LOCATED THE PULLEY ON IT. I FOUND A LENGTH OF 3/16 KEY STEEL AND FITTED IT IN PLACE. THE TOP WOODRUFFE KEY THAT LOCATED THE SLIDING UPPER HALF OF THE MOTOR PULLEY WAS ALSO MISSING SO THAT I HAD TO MAKE A NEW ONE. THIS WAS QUICKER THAN TRYING TO FIND AN iMPERIAL WOODRUFFE KEY IN OSLO!
ABOVE LEFT THE MOTOR PULLEY IN PLACE AND THE TOP HALF IN POSITION AND SLIDING FREELY. ABOVE RIGHT IS THE METHOD THAT I USED TO REST THE MOTOR NEAR IT`S MOUNTING POSITION SO THAT I COULD WIRE IT UP TO THE SHORT LENGTH OF CABLE.
ABOVE LEFT, A CLOSER LOOK AT THE MOTOR BEING HOOKED UP AND ABOVE RIGHT, THE MOTOR AND PULLEY BACK IN PLACE READY FOR ACTION AS SOON AS THE GUARD WAS RE FITTED.
