THESE GERMAN MADE BORING HEADS ARE REPUTED TO BE ONE OF THE BEST AROUND. THE TYPES THAT ARE DESCRIBED ON THIS PAGE ARE NO LONGER IN PRODUCTION BUT WERE CURRENT WHEN THE DECKEL FP1 WAS IN PRODUCTION.
THERE WERE SEVERAL SIZES AVAILABLE FROM ONE INCH TO SIX INCHES.

THE ABOVE PHOTO SHOWS THE UAP3 BORING HEAD NICELY BOXED UP. THE FIGURE 3 IS THE HEAD DIAMETER DIMENSION IN INCHES. THIS SIZE IS RECOMMENDED FOR THE DECKEL FP1 AND FP2 UNIVERSAL MILLING MACHINES
RECENTLY AT A CLOSING DOWN SALE IN OSLO I WAS ABLE TO BUY A JOB LOT OF THREE WOHLHAUPTERS IN THEIR BOXES IN REASONABLE CONDITION.

THE SIZES WERE 1 OFF UAP4 WITH A 4 MT SHANK 1 OFF UAP5 WITH A 5 MT SHANK AND 1 OFF UAP5 WITH AN INT 50 SHANK.

ADAPTING THE WOHLHAUPTER UAP4 WITH THE 4 MT SHANK TO FIT THE DECKEL FP1
ABOVE IS SHOWN THE 4MT SHANK ON THE UAP4 WOHLHAUPTER THAT I RECENTLY BOUGHT. IT HAS THE REMOVABLE TANG WHICH WAS NOT REQUIRED FOR THE ADAPTATION OF THE SHANK TO FIT THE FP1.
AFTER REMOVING THE TANG, I TRIED THE SHANK IN THE FP1 VERTICAL HEAD AND FOUND IT TO BE TOO LONG. AFTER COMPARING THE TANG WITH A DECKEL TANG THAT CAME WITH THE FP1, I CALCULATED HOW MUCH OF THE TANG WOULD HAVE TO BE CUT OFF.
AFTER REMOVING THE TANG, I TRIED THE SHANK IN THE FP1 VERTICAL HEAD AND FOUND IT TO BE TOO LONG. AFTER COMPARING THE TANG WITH A DECKEL TANG THAT CAME WITH THE FP1, I CALCULATED HOW MUCH OF THE TANG WOULD HAVE TO BE CUT OFF.
THE INTENTION WAS THAT A STUD AS SUPPLIED FOR DECKEL ACCESSORIES SHOWN ABOVE WOULD BE INSERTED INTO THE TANG SO THAT THE DECKEL DRAWBAR COULD BE USED.
ABOVE, THE HEAD BOLTED TO THE ECLIPSE ANGLE PLATE AND SUPORTED BY AN ECLIPSE VEE BLOCK WHILST BEING CUT TO LENGTH WITH A CUTTING DISC MOUNTED ON THE EAGLE SURFACE GRINDER.
THE PROBLEM WITH FITTING THE STUD WAS THAT THE THREADED HOLE IN THE SHANK WAS M14 AND THE STUD WAS M16. I SET UP THE WALLY IN THE THREE JAW CHUCK HELD BY A BORING BAR CLAMPED INTO THE CENTRE HOLE OF THE HEAD AND THEN BY USING THE ADJUSTING SCREW ON THE HEAD WAS ABLE TO ACCURATELY CENTRE IT WITH THE LATHE SPINDLE. STEADYING THE SHANK WITH THE FIXED STEADY, I THEN STARTED TO BORE OUT THE HOLE IN THE SHANK TO THE TAPPING DIAMETER FOR THE M16 THREAD WHICH WAS EXACTLY THE OUTER DIAMETER OF THE M14 THREAD. THEN THE PROBLEMS STARTED! THE SHANK WAS HARDENED AND JUST BLUNTED AN HSS TOOL. I HAD A COUPLE OF CARBIDE TIPPED BORING BARS THAT I USED TO BORE THE HOLE WITH BUT WHEN THE TOOL ENTERED THE SLOT CUT THROUGH THE SHANK, THE HAMMERING EFFECT CAUSED BOTH THE TOOLS TO SHATTER.
I TRIED TO CUT THE THREAD IN THE SHANK WITH A EXTRA STRENGTH HSS TAP BUT THIS JUST BLUNTED SO THAT THERE WERE ONLE THREE THREADS AVAILABLE TO SCREW THE ADAPTOR TO THE SHANK!
PONDERING ON THIS SITUATION, I ARGUED TO MYSELF THAT THIS WOULD SUFFICE, SO MACHINED THE ADAPTOR TO FIT IN THE SHANK AND AS SHOWN ON THE ABOVE LEFT IMAGE, DRILLED A HOLE FOR A SECURING BOLT.
THE RIGHT HAND IMAGE SHOWS THE FINISHED ITEM WHERE I HAD LOCTITED THE ADAPTOR IN POSITION AND ASSEMBLED THE SECURING BOLT IN PLACE.
PONDERING ON THIS SITUATION, I ARGUED TO MYSELF THAT THIS WOULD SUFFICE, SO MACHINED THE ADAPTOR TO FIT IN THE SHANK AND AS SHOWN ON THE ABOVE LEFT IMAGE, DRILLED A HOLE FOR A SECURING BOLT.

THIS HEAD IS LARGER THAN THE RECOMMENDED HEAD FOR THE DECKEL FP1 BUT THE ADVANTAGE IS THAT IT HAS AN AUTOMATIC FEED FOR FACING SURFACES WHICH IS VERY USEFUL TO HAVE ONCE YOU HAVE SORTED OUT HOW TO DO IT!

THE UAP2 BORING HEAD
I MANAGED TO WIN A WOHLHAPTER IMPERIAL UAP2 BORING HEAD ON EBAY BUT WHEN I RECEIVED IT THERE WAS A PROBLEM! THE SHANK WAS ORIGINALLY 1 MORSE TAPER BUT THIS HAD BEEN PARTLY MACHINED DOWN SO THAT THE SHANK WAS PARALLEL NEAR THE HEAD.

I HAD ORIGINALLY INTENDED THIS BEAUTIFUL MINI WALLY TO BE USED ON THE DORE WESTBURY MILL AS IT IS OF A MUCH BETTER QUALITY THAN THE ARRAND BORING HEAD THAT I HAD BEEN USING. THIS SHANK PROBLEM MEANT THAT THE SHANK WOULD HAVE TO BE SHORTENED SO THAT IT COULD BE HELD IN A COLLET IN THE FP1 SPINDLE AND A DEDICATED 2 MT WELDON SHANK FOR THE DORE WESTBURY. PERHAPS THAT WAS WHAT WAS INTENDED FOR THIS HEAD BUT WAS NOT CARRIED OUT?
