EW LATHE DEPTH STOP
THIS CAN BE A VALUABLE ADDITION TO THE LATHE AND THIS IS DESIGNED TO WORK IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE DOG CLUTCH WHERE THE DEPTH STOP WILL DECLUTCH THE LEADSCREW TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE MACHINE
ABOVE IS A DESIGN SKETCH OF A LEADSCREW CLUTCH BASED ON A DESIGN BY J. J. CONSTABLE, FIRST PUBLISHED IN THE MODEL ENGINEER MAGAZINE, THIS DESIGN DID NOT REQUIRE THE LEADSCREW TO BE SPLIT.
I ALSO INCORPORATED A DEPTH STOP, IT WAS AN INTERESTING EXERCISE BUT I DECIDED THAT IT WAS FAR TOO COMPLEX TO GO TO THE PROTOTYPE STAGE, AS THE CLUTCH THAT I DESCRIBED ABOVE IS MORE PRACTICAL AND EASIER TO MAKE.
THE DRAWING IS TOO COMPRESSED TO MAKE ANY SENSE TO THOSE NOT TRAINED TO READ DRAWINGS, BUT IF YOU LOOK AT THE MIDDLE PART YOU WILL SEE "ADJUSTABLE STOP". THIS IMPINGES ON THE OPERATING LEVER OF THE CLUTCH AND AS THE ADJUSTABLE STOP ROD IS MOUNTED IN A BRACKET FIXED TO THE SADDLE, THE EFFECT WILL BE TO PUSH THE CLUTCH OUT OF ENGAGEMENT AND STOP THE FEED.

IN THE ABOVE LEFT PHOTO THE SOMEWHAT OUT OF FOCUS ROD IS SEEN NEARING THE CLUTCH OPERATING LEVER AND IN THE RIGHT HAND PHOTO THE METHOD OF MOUNTING THE ROD ASSEMBLY CAN BE SEEN. THIS IS ACHIEVED BY USING LONGER SCREWS TO FIX THE BRACKET TO THE LEADSCREW NUT ASSEMBLY ON THE SADDLE. AS SHOWN ON "SECTION AA" IN THE ABOVE SKETCH.
I`M STILL THINKING ABOUT THE CONFIGURATION OF THE CONTACT POINT OF THE ROD AND LEVER AND HAVEN`T ACTUALLY TRIED THIS OUT YET BUT SEE NO REASON WHY IT SHOULD`NT WORK.
NO WORRIES, THE STOP WORKS PERFECTLY IN THE CONFIGURATION SHOWN!

WORKING DRAWINGS FOR THE DEPTH STOP
ABOVE THE DRAWING FOR THE EW DEPTH STOP. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS INTENDED TO WORK IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE EW CLUTCH AND IS A FAIL SAFE DEVICE TO PREVENT THE SADDLE PLOUGHING INTO THE WORK. IT CAN BE ADJUSTED TO STOP AT THE SAME POINT EVERY TIME SO THAT YOU CAN USE THE SLOW FEED TO MACHINE UP TO A SHOULDER.

IN THE FUTURE, I WILL DESIGN A MICROMETER ADJUSTMENT SO THAT DECLUTCHING CAN BE PERFORMED TO STOP THE FEED EXACTLY WHERE REQUIRED.
