THE DECKEL FP1 IS NOW IN MY WORKSHOP AT HOBØL, I`M IN THE PROCESS OF DISMANTLING THIS PRECISION GERMAN WUNDERKIND AND WILL ADD PHOTOS AND DESCRIPTION TO THE DECKEL FP1 PAGE SOON.
UNFORTUNATELY DUE TO MY WIFE BEING SICK I WON`T BE ABLE TO ATTEND THE BEAULIEU AUTOJUMBLE THIS YEAR BUT WILL ATTEND THE ONE AT EKEBERG WHICH IS USUALLY HELD IN SEPTEMBER IF IT STILL IS IN OPERATION.
THE RAGLAN MILL SUFFERED A MOTOR FAILURE LAST WEEK AND WHEN I WENT TO A MOTOR REPAIRMAN WAS QUOTED A PRICE OF 10,000 NOK PLUS MOMS TO REWIND THE COILS!
UNFORTUNATELY THE ORIGINAL MOTOR CANNOT BE REPLACED BY A NEW ONE AS THE MOUNTING FOOT DIMENSIONS OF THE 1960`S ORIGINAL CROMPTON PARKINSON 3 PHASE MOTOR ARE MUCH SMALLER THAN THE NEW CHINESE MADE CHEAPO MOTORS WHICH WILL NOT FIT THE RAGLAN.
I WENT TO ALL THE TROUBLE OF CHECKING OUT THE MOTOR COILS WITH A MULTIMETER AND FOUND OUT THAT ONE OF THE PHASE COILS WAS BURNT OUT. THE REPAIRMAN TOOK ONE LOOK AT THE MOTOR AND SIMPLY SAID THAT ONE OF THE COILS HAD BURNT OUT WITHOUT EVEN CHECKING WITH HIS EQUIPMENT! I ASKED HIM HOW HE KNEW WITHOUT CHECKING AND SMILING, HE PULLED OUT A SMALL BENT NAIL FROM ONE OF THE COILS.
I BOUGHT ANOTHER MOTOR ON FLEABAY UK FOR £60 PLUS £38 POSTAGE WHICH SHOULD ARRIVE SOON AND I WILL BE ABLE TO PUT THE RAGLAN BACK INTO SERVICE AND CONTINUE THE MACHINING OF THE WESTBURY HEAD.
SO WHAT PROJECTS ARE IN PROGRESS OR ON THE BACK BURNER?
1/ THE RESTORATION OF THE FP1 SLOW SPEED SYSTEM.
2/ FITTING THE BRIDGEPORT "M" HEAD TO THE FP1.
3/ THE DESIGN AND MANUFACTURE OF THE IMPROVED WESTBURY HEAD.
4/ REBUILD THE HEAD OF THE MYSTERY DORE WESTBURY MILL.
5/ CONTINUE THE IMPROVEMENTS ON THE EW LATHE.
6/ FINISH OFF THE REBUILD OF THE SLOTTING MACHINE HEAD.
7/ MAKE THE MISSING GIB STRIP FOR THE MES SURFACE GRINDER.
8/ WRITE THE DESIGN HISTORY OF THE EW LATHE.
